India's semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem has now expanded well beyond announcements. The Tata-PSMC fabrication plant at Dholera, Micron's advanced ATMP facility in Sanand, Tata Electronics' OSAT plant in Assam, and CG Power's OSAT facility are progressing simultaneously under the India Semiconductor Mission. Collectively, these projects represent investments exceeding ₹1.5 lakh crore and are expected to create thousands of direct and indirect high-value jobs.
From Chip Design to Chip Manufacturing
For nearly three decades, India became a global powerhouse in semiconductor design. Companies established large engineering centres focusing on RTL Design, Verification, Physical Design, DFT, Analog Design, Firmware and Embedded Software.
That gap is finally beginning to close.
The Tata-PSMC fabrication facility will manufacture chips using mature process nodes suitable for automotive, industrial, power management and communication applications. Micron is already producing advanced memory packaging products, while CG Power and Tata's Assam facility will strengthen India's semiconductor packaging and testing capabilities.
The result is an entirely new employment landscape.

Recent approvals include compound semiconductor manufacturing, GaN technologies, OSAT facilities and advanced display manufacturing projects under the India Semiconductor Mission. Discussions around India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 also indicate a broader focus on strengthening the complete semiconductor value chain, including upstream manufacturing and research capabilities.
As this ecosystem matures, demand will extend well beyond chip designers.
Universities, equipment suppliers, materials companies, automation vendors, EDA companies, logistics providers and testing organisations will all require semiconductor professionals.
In other words, the industry's hiring demand will become much broader than it is today.
What Companies Should Do Now
Many organisations may underestimate how competitive semiconductor hiring is about to become.
The same experienced engineer could soon receive opportunities from fabs, OSAT companies, global IDMs, equipment manufacturers, semiconductor startups and design centres simultaneously.
Companies that build employer branding, campus partnerships, structured learning programs and long-term talent pipelines today will enjoy a significant competitive advantage tomorrow.
Waiting until facilities become fully operational may simply be too late.
